Dog sledding
One of the most fun and exciting things to do during a Sweden winter holiday is dog sledding.
Being pulled through a magical winter wonderland by a group of well-trained Huskies is on almost everyone’s bucket list.
Jokkmokkguiderna are an experienced tour company specialising in multi-day tours through Swedish Lapland’s national parks.
But they also offer fantastic 3-hour tours through forests and across lakes around Jokkmokk. The tour includes a delicious fika in the middle of a magical winter wonderland, sitting around a warm fire grilling hot dogs and sipping hot chocolate and coffee.
Drive a snow mobile
If you like speed and an adrenaline kick, driving a snow mobile across frozen lakes and through snow covered forests is the winter activity for you.
- Tip: Wear a helmet, safety first!
Snow shoe hike through the forest
To get warm and work up an appetite for a traditional Swedish fika, try snow shoe hiking.
Strap on a pair of snow shoes and make your way through a magical winter wonderland.
- Tip: If you can time it, go during the early morning around 10, or early afternoon around 13, to enjoy beautifully pink sky!
Ice fishing
Drill a hole into the ice and grab some fresh lake water to brew coffee, or sit and fish while enjoying the peace and quiet.
Watching the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a magnificent light show dancing across the night sky.
Seeing it (and photographing this natural wonder), is a must on a Sweden winter holiday.
Areas like Abisko national park and Aurora Lake Lapland in Tjautjas are some of the best spots to witness this natural phenomenon.
Fika by the fire
“Functioning as both a verb and a noun, the concept of fika is simple. It is the moment that you take a break, often with a cup of coffee, but alternatively with tea, and find a baked good to pair with it. You can do it alone, you can do it with friends. You can do it at home, in a park or at work. But the essential thing is that you do it, that you make time to take a break: that’s what fika is all about.”
Fika is a beautiful (and deeply engrained) Swedish tradition, and enjoying it in the middle of Sweden’s untouched nature is extra special.
Visit the Ice Hotel
One of the most famous attractions in Swedish Lapland is the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. Having been around for over 30 years, it features artistic sculptures made from the ice of Torne river. Artists from around the world showcase their skills in the 20-something different rooms and suites made entirely from ice and snow.
